Lung cancer can be a devastating disease for a person and their family. It is the second most common form of non-skin cancer among women and men. The most common form of cancer in men is prostate cancer and for women it is breast cancer. There are some treatment options if you have been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The most common way to treat early stages of lung cancer is through surgery. That would involve removing the tumor by using robotic and video assisted techniques. It would be a minimally invasive surgery using small incisions to descrease the time in recovery. However, if the tumor is large, then a larger incision would be required.
Chemotherapy is another method to treat lung cancer. It can be done in three ways. Chemotherapy can be used before surgery to destroy cancer cells. Secondly, chemotherapy can be used after surgery to kill cancer cells that were not removed during surgery. It also can be used to prevent cancer cells from spreading to other parts of the body. Thirdly, chemotherapy can be used intravenously. It can by circulated by the bloodstream to kill cancer cells throughout the body
Another method to treat lung cancer is by radiation therapy. The first type of radiation therapy is external beam radiation therapy. This therapy delivers high doses of radiation from outside the body to lung cancer cells. The other is high dose rate brachytherapy. This type of radiation therapy delivers high doses of radiation from implants that are placed near the lung cancer tumors.
Genomic testing is used more often in the treatment of lung cancer. It helps oncologists determine what caused the gene alterations that caused the tumors, and, it helps the oncologist tailor-make a lung cancer treatment plan specifically for the patient.

Targeted therpy is another method to treat lung cancer. It is used to target specific molecules involved in the tumor’s growth, but it doesn’t affect all the cells in the body like chemotherapy does.
Immunotherapy is a method that involves the patients immune system. The goal is to alert the immune system of cancer cells so the cancer cells may be destroyed by the immune system itself. And, interventional pulmonology is used to diagnose lung cancer, treat the tumors, and help relieve the symptoms that limits the patient’s breathing or cause of pain.
